Traditional abrasive blast preparation is becoming a thing of the past. State and Federal environmental regulations have created the push away from abrasive blasting. With the increasing cost of constructing environmentally sound containment structures, and disposal of abrasive blast media, alternative techniques are growing in popularity.
Even the United States Navy has joined in this campaign with the recent adoption of written and visual standards for high pressure water jet surface preparation. The acceptance of water jetting (10,000 – 40,000 psi) as a preferred surface preparation technique is not solely a financial move.
Over the past 15 years, many studies have been conducted which prove that water jetting methods allow for a superior substrate in both metal and concrete. While abrasive blast methods can trap chlorides and contaminants within the profile of the surface (and lead to premature coating failure), high pressure water jetting washes these contaminates out of the substrate providing a perfect surface for the coating product to properly bond to.
Hennigan Engineering has the expertise and the specialized equipment to remove product build-up, dirt, oil, corrosion scale, and failed coatings down to the substrate and follow-up with a recommended coating system application for steel and concrete surfaces. We have the ability to perform surface preparation for weld inspections as well as various types of NDT using either high pressure water blasting or abrasive blasting techniques. Please contact us to see how we can be of service in your next coating removal or application project.
